NEWS FROM THE ENVIRONMENT TEAM
The Environmental Team has had a great year of educating Bethany’s students on the importance of being GREEN and environmentally aware!
A few highlights from the year include:
- Environmental Week (Jan. 28 – Feb. 1) was a huge success. It included a visit from ‘Luey the anti-litter mascot’, as well as grade level presentations all week from the Live Green in Plano team. Each day included a theme and a fun fact to educate our students on a different aspect of environmental awareness.
- Bethany successfully collected an amazing 196 pounds of plastic bags during the plastic bag recycling contest co-sponsored by Trex Lumber and Live Green in Plano. Way to go Bethany Bunch!
- Our organics recycling program continues to grow and is hugely successful in diverting waste from the cafeteria into organics recycling.
We are proud and excited to announce that Bethany Elementary and Boggess Elementary tied for 1st place in the Trex/Live Green in Plano plastic bag recycling contest, with each school bringing in 196 pounds of plastic bags!
The sponsor of this recycling initiative was Trex lumber. Trex makes a plastic lumber product out of the plastic bags and reclaimed sawdust, keeping some 300,000 tons of plastic and wood scrap out of landfills every year!! They are largest plastic bag recycler in the world!
Trex has graciously awarded each winning school a bench made out of this lumber product. Mrs. Bleggi has presented the bench to the students, which is another great way to reinforce the value of recycling and to show them the end product of all their hard work. Way to go Bethany Bunch!
